How does the German tax system work?
Germany uses a progressive tax system with rates from 0% to 45%. Unlike many countries, the rate increases smoothly between 14% and 42% using a mathematical formula, rather than jumping between fixed brackets.
What is the solidarity surcharge?
The Solidaritätszuschlag (solidarity surcharge) is 5.5% of your income tax, originally introduced to fund German reunification. Since 2021, it only applies if your income tax exceeds €18,130 (single) or €36,260 (married).
What about church tax in Germany?
If you are a registered member of a church in Germany, you pay church tax (Kirchensteuer) of 8% or 9% of your income tax, depending on the state. This calculator does not include church tax.
What is the Grundfreibetrag?
The Grundfreibetrag is the basic tax-free allowance. For 2025, it is €12,096. Income up to this amount is not subject to income tax.
