Top marginal state income tax rates for 2025

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this calculator?
This calculator uses top marginal state income tax rates from the Tax Foundation (2025). Actual savings depend on your full bracket calculation, deductions, credits, and filing status. Use this as a starting estimate and consult a qualified tax professional for precise figures.
Which states have no income tax?
Nine US states charge zero state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Note that Washington state does tax capital gains over $1 million, and New Hampshire historically taxed interest and dividend income (though this was phased out).
Do I need to physically move to save on state taxes?
Yes. You need to establish domicile (legal residence) in the new state and typically break ties with your old state. This means changing your driver's license, voter registration, and spending a majority of your time in the new state. Simply renting a mailbox is not enough.
Is Florida the best zero-tax state?
Florida is the most popular choice due to no income tax, no estate tax, strong asset protection laws (like homestead exemption), and a straightforward domicile process. However, the best state depends on your lifestyle, career, and personal circumstances.
What about federal taxes?
Federal income tax does not change when you move between states. This calculator only shows state income tax savings. Your federal tax obligation remains the same regardless of which state you live in.
How do I actually change my state residency?
Changing state residency involves establishing domicile in the new state: get a new driver's license, register to vote, update your address with banks and financial institutions, and spend a majority of your time there.
Does this calculator account for local taxes?
No. Some states and cities levy additional local income taxes (e.g., New York City, Portland). This calculator only shows state-level income tax savings. Your actual savings could be even higher if you are also avoiding local income taxes.
