Frequently Asked Questions

How does Canadian income tax work?
Canada has a dual tax system: federal and provincial. Federal tax rates range from 15% to 33%. Each province adds its own rates. This calculator includes Ontario as the default provincial tax.
What is the Basic Personal Amount?
The federal Basic Personal Amount for 2025 is $16,129. You receive a non-refundable tax credit at 15%, meaning the first $16,129 of income is effectively tax-free at the federal level.
Why does this calculator use Ontario rates?
Provincial tax rates vary significantly across Canada. Ontario is used as the default example since it is the most populous province. Other provinces like Alberta (10% flat) or Quebec (up to 25.75%) have very different rates.
What about CPP and EI contributions?
Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI) premiums are additional payroll deductions not included in this calculator. For 2025, CPP is 5.95% up to $71,300 (first and second ceiling combined) and EI is 1.58% up to $65,700.
What is the highest combined tax rate in Canada?
The highest combined federal-provincial rate varies by province. In Ontario, the top combined rate is approximately 53.53% (33% federal + 20.53% Ontario including surtax). Nova Scotia has the highest at about 54%.
